AVIF is the newest mainstream image format, and support outside current browsers is still patchy: older photo editors, office software, upload forms, and many Windows installations cannot read it. Your browser, however, decodes AVIF natively, and this tool uses that to read the file and save it back out as a JPG that opens anywhere.
AVIF is usually lossy and so is JPG; at the default 90% quality the round trip is visually indistinguishable for normal photos. AVIF can store transparency but JPG cannot, so transparent regions are filled with white during conversion. If you need the transparency kept, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
AVIF is newer than JPG, PNG, and WebP, and much of the software outside current browsers has not caught up. Converting the AVIF to JPG is the quickest way to make it open everywhere.
Both formats are usually lossy, so a small amount of detail is re-encoded, but at a high quality setting the difference is invisible in normal photos. Use the quality slider to trade size against clarity.
