What converting to PNG does (and does not do)
PNG is lossless, so once your image is a PNG, further saves and edits stop degrading it: that is the real benefit. What conversion cannot do is restore detail the JPG already discarded, and it cannot invent a transparent background; PNG supports transparency, but a converted photo stays fully opaque.
Expect a bigger file
Because PNG keeps every pixel exactly, the file usually grows, sometimes several times over for photographs. That is normal and is the price of lossless storage. If small size matters more than losslessness, JPG or WebP is the better target.
When this conversion is genuinely worth doing
Three cases come up again and again. The first is a system that simply refuses JPG: some design tools, print templates, and upload forms accept PNG only, and no amount of arguing changes that. The second is an image you are about to edit repeatedly, where working in PNG means the tenth save looks exactly like the first instead of accumulating compression damage. The third is a graphic that arrived as a JPG by mistake, such as a logo someone exported wrongly, which you want to keep pixel-stable from here on. Outside those cases, converting photographs to PNG mostly buys you a larger file for no visible gain.
Common questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. It preserves the image exactly as it is now and stops any further quality loss from future saves, but detail the JPG already discarded cannot be recovered.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly. For photographs that typically means a much larger file than the compressed JPG; that is expected.
Will my PNG have a transparent background?
No. PNG supports transparency, but converting a JPG does not create any: the photo stays fully opaque. Transparency has to exist in the source image.
Does the PNG keep the photo's EXIF data?
No. The image is redrawn onto a blank canvas and encoded fresh, so camera details and any GPS location in the original JPG are not carried into the PNG.
Would lossless WebP be a better target than PNG?
Often yes, if the destination supports it: lossless WebP keeps every pixel exactly like PNG while producing a meaningfully smaller file. Choose PNG when maximum compatibility matters more than size.
