About Image Converter

Image Converter is a free tool that converts images between formats in seconds, right in your browser. Drop in a picture, choose a format, and download the result. No sign-up, no watermarks, no waiting on an upload.

Private by design

This is what sets Image Converter apart: your images never leave your device. Most online converters upload your files to a server to process them. This one does everything locally in your browser, so your photos stay private and conversions are instant. There's no upload or download round-trip to an offsite computer or server.

Formats it supports

Convert to PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, and ICO (favicons), and convert from those plus HEIC, the format iPhones use for photos. Whether you're shrinking a photo for the web, making a favicon for a website, or turning an iPhone HEIC into a shareable JPG, it's a couple of clicks.

How it works

Standard formats use your browser's built-in image engine. For newer formats like AVIF and HEIC, the tool uses open-source codecs (compiled to WebAssembly) that run on your device. They load only when you need them, so the tool stays fast for everyone else.

Who runs this site

Image Converter is built and maintained by Nathan Hays, an independent developer who runs a small family of free browser-based utility sites. Questions, bug reports, and suggestions are welcome at [email protected].

Guides, not just a button

Choosing a format is often harder than converting one, so the site includes a growing set of plain-language guides: the format guide for the overview, JPG vs PNG for the everyday decision, WebP explained for web images, what HEIC is for iPhone photos, PNG transparency for logos, size vs quality for files that are too big, and image metadata for what your photos quietly carry. Everything is listed on the all guides page.
