What Is HEIC, and Why Does My iPhone Use It?
If you have ever emailed a holiday photo to a relative and been told "it won't open", you have met HEIC. It is the format iPhones and iPads use for photos by default, it is genuinely excellent at what it does, and it is the single most common reason people go looking for an image converter. Here is what it is, why Apple chose it, and every reasonable way to get those photos to someone who cannot read them.

The format in plain terms
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. The pictures inside it are compressed using HEIF, the High Efficiency Image File Format, which reuses compression machinery originally built for video. Video encoders became extremely good at predicting one part of a picture from another, and applying that skill to a single still photograph turns out to pay off handsomely: a HEIC file typically stores a photo at roughly half the size of a JPG of comparable quality.
The word "container" matters too. A HEIC file is not necessarily one picture. It can hold several images at once, along with depth information, edit history, and thumbnails. That is how features like Live Photos and portrait-mode depth effects travel with the file rather than living somewhere else.
Why Apple made it the default
Phone cameras got better faster than phone storage got cheaper. A modern iPhone shoots very large photographs, records bursts, and keeps everything in a library the user expects to sync. Halving the size of every photo is the difference between a phone that fills up and one that does not, and it also halves what has to move across a network during a backup. From Apple's side, adopting HEIC was a straightforward win, and the compatibility cost falls mainly at the moment a photo leaves the Apple world.
There are quality upsides as well. HEIF can store more than 8 bits per color channel, which gives smoother gradients and more headroom in bright skies and dark shadows than JPG allows. In everyday viewing you will rarely notice, but it is real, and it is part of why HEIC files hold up better under editing.
The compatibility problem
HEIC is well supported across Apple's own devices and reasonably supported by current software elsewhere, but "reasonably" hides a lot of edge cases. Windows can display HEIC only when the right codec components are present, and they are not always installed. Plenty of individual applications never added support: older photo editors, some content management systems, print kiosks, job application portals, insurance claim uploads, and school submission systems. Android handling varies by device and app. Most web forms that accept "images" mean JPG and PNG.
The practical result is a familiar loop: you send a photo, the recipient cannot open it, you send a screenshot instead, and the quality suffers. Converting once, properly, is faster and looks better.
How to share HEIC photos with people who cannot open them
1. Convert the file before you send it
This is the reliable option and the one that always works, because the recipient receives an ordinary JPG. Drop the .heic files into the HEIC to JPG converter, convert, and attach the results. You can do up to 50 at a time, and because the decoding happens in your browser on your own device, personal photos never travel to anyone's server. If you need lossless output for an editor or a strict upload form, use HEIC to PNG instead, but expect a much larger file.
2. Let the share sheet convert for you
When you share photos from an iPhone directly to some apps and services, iOS converts to JPG automatically. Mail often does; messaging apps usually do; cloud links usually do not, because they hand over the original file. The catch is that you cannot always tell in advance which path you are on, which is why people only discover the problem after sending.
3. Turn the setting off at the source
On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. From that point on the camera records JPG instead of HEIC. You lose the storage saving and some of the quality headroom, and you gain never thinking about this again. Note that this changes new photos only; everything already in your library stays HEIC.
4. Check the transfer setting for the computer
Under Settings, Photos, the "Transfer to Mac or PC" option can be set to Automatic, which converts to a compatible format when you copy photos off the device, or Keep Originals, which does not. If photos arrive on your PC as HEIC files you did not expect, this setting is usually why.
Should you convert your whole library?
Generally, no. Converting everything to JPG doubles your storage, applies a second round of lossy compression to every photo, and discards the extra color depth for no benefit you can see. The better habit is to keep the library as it is and convert on demand, only the photos you are actually sending somewhere. Converting is fast, and the original stays untouched on your phone either way.
The exception is a genuine archive migration, for example moving a photo library to a platform that cannot read HEIC at all. In that case convert deliberately, at high quality, and keep the originals until you are certain the new home is working.
What conversion does and does not preserve
- The picture: preserved, decoded at full resolution and re-encoded in your chosen format.
- Dimensions: unchanged. The converter does not resize.
- Motion from a Live Photo: not preserved. A still image comes out.
- Depth and portrait data: not preserved. The rendered picture is what you get.
