Choose PNG when you need lossless output that survives repeated editing and re-saving, or when a system specifically demands PNG. Choose JPG when you want small files for sharing; that is the more common case. PNG files of full photographs are several times larger than JPGs of the same image, which is the price of keeping every pixel.
Your browser decodes the HEIC photo with an open-source codec that runs on your device, draws it losslessly, and saves it back out as a PNG. The photo itself never crosses the network, which matters when the pictures are personal.
You can add up to 50 HEIC files at once. Each one is decoded first, which is why a spinner appears briefly before the row is ready, and then converted when you press the button; a Download all button appears once more than one file is finished. A few things do not survive the trip, and it is better to know in advance: a Live Photo becomes a still image, portrait depth information is dropped, and the EXIF metadata block, including any GPS coordinates, is not carried into the PNG. The PNG step is: PNG keeps every pixel of the decoded photo exactly, and further edits or saves will not degrade it. The original HEIC was already compressed by the iPhone, and that earlier compression cannot be undone.
HEIC is one of the most space-efficient photo formats and PNG is lossless, so a full photograph typically grows several times over. If size matters more, convert to JPG instead.
